Student Spotlight:
Unruly Phoenix

What sparked your passion for music and inspired you to become a DJ or producer?

The story of academy student: Unruly Phoenix

Music heals me It has always been there for me.
And from a young age, I loved sharing music with my family & peers.
I loved singing, playing the flute, and people always find it so special that I appreciated music from around the globe. One day, I realized that I needed to do something with music. At that point, I was still living in Suriname. I was still studying to work in the Netherlands at Shell Pernis as an Electrical Operator.

How do you approach the creative process when producing a new track or curating a playlist? Any rituals or specific inspirations? Where do you usually find your songs and sounds?

Everything works best for me when I get in the flow. Then the magic happens. I also love smudging the space with sage before I start my performance. It helps with creating a positive atmosphere.

Are there any specific genres or artists that have influenced your unique sound and style as a DJ or producer?

I love my Suriname African culture, and that’s why I draw a lot of inspiration from Kaseko's music. The Interacting rhythmic patterns on the big drum (skratji) and rolls on the separate snare drum, solo and choir singing, and riffs from the wind section (consisting of saxophone, trumpet, and sometimes trombone) play a fundamental role.

What challenges have you faced as a beginner, and how have you overcome them?

Exploring my talents was a real challange. As a multidimensional being, I love many different things. So, sometimes, it’s hard to do one thing at once. But with focus and determination, I found my way.

What advice would you give to aspiring DJs and producers looking to break into the music industry?

Be authentic, manifest what you want & work towards your goals with dedication. Explore what you like as an artist. Focus on yourself & don’t compare yourself with another artist. Be inspired.

What is your future outlook?

I am very excited for this festival season. I'm playing at Best Kept Secret this year and a lot of dope festivals. Also, my Amapiano EP Phoenix Rising is dropping soon. I'm super excited about that project.

As a Tomorrowland Academy graduate, what message do you want to convey to others aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

Tomorrowland Academy is the place to be to learn. I would also really recommend the Tomorrowland Bootcamp because you can have a boot camp and entrance to Tomorrowland. And that, my friend, is an experience you do not want to miss.
